Kefalos is not only a resort, but also and authentic picturesque Greek village located above the resort on top of a hill.
In ancient times, Kefalos used to be called Astypalea and was the island’s capital city till 366 BC. The remnants of the ancient city can be found around 3 kilometers from the present-day village, in the area of Palatia, and include a 5th-century temple dedicated to the goddess Demeter, a Hellenistic theater, a Doric temple and the church of Panagia Palatiani. The wider area has also yielded significant archaeological findings, as traces of human activity from the Neolithic times have been discovered inside the White Stone Cave (Aspri Petra in Greek).
